Different designs of structures were designed for the trapping of solar energy for space and water heating in mountain settings of the Indian Himalayas. Locally fabricated solar water heater were designed and fabricated of GI pipe coil fitted in a frame of 90cmX45 Cm wooden frame double glazed on the sun facing side with 4 mm window glass. Other side of the coil was covered with GI iron sheet (18 gaze). GI pipe coil and GI sheet were black coated to absorb maximum solar energy. GI sheet on the back was insulated with 3.75 mm thermo coal sheet fixed with bitumen. Finally the outside of the thermo coal sheet was covered with this GI sheet to protect water seepage from outside. Air between double glazings prevents loss of heat after sunset and keep water worm till next morning. The system was quite efficient and demonstrated high acceptance among the beneficiaries using the pilot units.
